I’m not one to wax philosophical about T.V. shows, but UPN may have the best lifestyle comedy show in network television. Girlfriends is about the trials and tribunes of four young African-American professional females. What could a young, white, Jewish Canadian have in common with four black females - in Los Angeles no less? Your first conclusion is right: nothing. However, it’s precisely this anomaly that makes the show so effective. Girlfriends’ ability to transcend racial and social (amongst other) lines in a uniquely comedic fashion releases it from the shackles of UPN’s notorious “racial programming”.
It is no wonder Girlfriends is Kelsey Grammar’s baby, as it assumes a similar character to that of Frasier. Frasier was capable of attracting an audience wider than the assumed wannabe intellects (usually humanities undergrad students) by enticing the “average” nightly viewer. That is to say, both shows develop a unique, yet, similar narrative that compels even the most unlikely demographic to ‘see’ it through. They cross boundaries rarely even flirted with by other shows. Chronically overrated shows like: CSI (“Suicide jumpers don’t take off their eyeglasses”), The West Wing (the writing wind was knocked out of this show years ago) and Six Feet Under (savants on the edge of society) and a handful of reality shows pander, regrettably, to armchair detectives and other pathetic indolents (think: room-temperature IQ types) lurking in suburban living-rooms the world over.

C'mon Eliot, surely you can find better than this show. Where I’m from, girlfriends has a 2am timeslot. And each time I watch it, I am reminded by why it clearly deserves such a graveyard spot. Every episode seems to be the same and there is way too much preaching. All of the girls are continually bleating on about how its tough for them to be a young black woman trying to make it today in the professional world and they invariably go on to spout out clichés like “this time I’m gonna do what’s right for me” which all seem to have been lifted directly from Dr Phil. It is such a tired old format – a show about girls that who go out with looser guys, get screwed over and then cry about it, meanwhile they have a nice guy at home, who is treated as their whipping boy. On a lesser note, the girls are decidedly average looking by Hollywood standards
Hey Pence, welcome to the "blogosphere." Good shit. I had to start my own blog in order to post here, which is lame, but now you gotta give me shout outs- www.michaelcollinge.blogspot.com.
As far as "Sex in the Ghetto" goes, I've never seen it and I hopefully never will. TV sucks. And stop "waxing philosophical," will you. FUCK!
Gimme your MSN. mcolling at uvic.ca.
